Jim Sledge started as a student worker in the Photo Lab branch of University Relations in 1982.
This position grew into a part-time temporary slot, which Jim filled while also working part-time
in the James H. Quillen College of Medicine's Biomedical Communications and attending classes
mainly in ETSU's Department of Art & Design. In 1986, Jim left Johnson City to pursue an
internship at Alderman Studios in High Point, N.C., assisting in furniture photography for
manufacturers and clients such as JCPenney. After the internship concluded, Jim returned to
Johnson City and completed the coursework required to graduate from ETSU with a B.F.A. in
art/photography in 1987.
Since 1988, Jim has worked at ETSU full-time in the position of photographer. His duties
include (but are certainly not limited to): portraiture for the Buccaneer yearbook;
preparation of portrait packages for sale to students; supplying photographs to the Buccaneer
and East Tennessean as needed; photography of events, functions, performances, etc.,
for most university publications, as well as special needs photography for specific publications;
and black and white film processing and printing to fulfill the needs of both internal and
external clients. There's always plenty to do in the Photo Lab.
