VBA Benefits Information
Via a VPN
April 13, 2000
The Veterans Benefits
Administration (VBA; includes the Education Service) is testing a Virtual
Private Network (VPN) as a way to set up a worldwide network of remote
sites to directly provide veterans with benefits information. This will
give VBA more flexibility as to where a veteran can go to get services.
It will expand the VBA from 58 regional offices to more than 200 locations
worldwide, including some military bases.
Agency claims representatives
and accredited veterans service organizations will use their desktop or
notebook computers to link to the VPN via the Internet. The VPN will authenticate
the user and give them access to the agency systems. Once in, the user
can access multiple applications from the Benefits Delivery Network to
internal electronic mail.
