IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
In celebration of
Women's History Month, the Women's Resource Center will sponsor a guest
lecture on Tuesday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., in the D. P. Culp University
Center Auditorium. Speaker for the evening will be Judge Jean A. Stanley,
Circuit Court Judge Part II, First Judicial District. Judge Stanley
will address "Women and Politics."
Judge Stanley holds a 1974 bachelor
of science degree from ETSU. She received her doctor of jurisprudence
degree from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville in 1978. Prior to
being elected Circuit Court judge she was a partner in the local law
firm of Sherrod, Stanley, Lincoln, and Goldstein.
The guest lecture will include a question-answer
session and a reception will be held in the main lobby adjacent to the
auditorium immediately following the lecture. Please make plans to attend
this ETSU event saluting Women's History Month.
"WOMEN ON AIR"
Every Friday afternoon at 12:30, WETS-FM
89.5 broad- casts a radio show called "Women On Air." The show began
with the intention to promote women in the arts, education, business
and the community through public radio and since May 1987, the show
has been doing just that! Founded by Louise Vahle, the "programming
is primarily music, but does include interviews, poetry and literature
readings, and announcements," says Susan Lachmann, the current host
and producer for "Women On Air."

Ms. Lachmann has
been producing and hosting "Women On Air" for seven years. She has had
the opportunity to interview such artists as Emmylou Harris, Barbara
Kingsolver, Odetta, Judy Collins and Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in
the Rock. She states that through the years she has had the opportunity
to promote young women in both student projects and activities such
as "Take Our Daughters to Work® Day."
Artists currently incorporated in the play list for "Women On Air" include
Sweet Honey, Rory Block, Indigo Girls, Ferron, Tracy Chapman, Disappear
Fear, Melissa Etheridge, Laura Love and more! So tune in to WETS-FM
89.5 on Friday at 12:30 p.m., for "Women On Air."
KICK
OFF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN THE CULP CENTER FORUM
The Women's Resource Center will kick
off Women's History Month on Tuesday, March 2 in the Forum of the D. P.
Culp Center at noon. The event will feature an upbeat video exploring
women's changing work roles from 1900 to the present. The video entitled
"There's No Such Thing as Woman's Work" is a production of the Women's
Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor. Light refreshments will be served.

Come be a part of the kick-off event for Women's History Month that will feature
an upbeat video exploring women's changing work roles from 1900 to the present.
The video entitled "There's No Such Thing as Women's Work" is a production
of the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor. Light refreshments

This series begins with "Principles of Investing." Clem Wilkes, senior account
executive with Raymond James Financial Services, will discuss investment principles
and practices.

"Come Sit By Me" is an exploration of women's writings in the American theatre.
The acting talents of the Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Organization will be showcased
through a series of plays that explore women's writings since the 1900's.
This series will be presented in three parts. The first night of play-readings
entitled, "This is What Comes Of Going to the Theater", will highlight women
playwrights prior to 1920.
This event is co-sponsored by the ETSU Women's Resource Center and the Alpha
Psi Omega Theatre Organization.
"Managing Multiple
Priorities"
Tuesday, Mar. 23, House of Ribs Restaurant, Dinner 6:30 p.m., Seminar 7:30-8:30
p.m.
Dr. Bill Kirkwood, Professor of Communication and Director of Oral Communication
at East Tennessee State University will discuss basic principles of time management,
encourage audience members to select one of the principles for further work,
and lead the participants in a brief exercise to begin applying the principle
in their normal routines. Registration is closed. This seminar has been re-scheduled
from the original date of February 23.
This event is co-sponsored by the ETSU Women's Resource Center and the Tri-Cities
Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

One"

A panel discussion that will provide information relating to community resources
regarding the care of a homebound loved one. Ms. Bonnie Bullock of Wellmont's
Madison House will facilitate the panel discussion.

County Regional Health Department, the ETSU at Bristol/Institute for Continued
Learning, and the ETSU/UT at Kingsport/Institute for Continued Learning.

play-readings entitled, "If They Shall Recognize Each Other, The World Will
Be Blown Apart", will highlight women playwrights from the 1960's through
the present.

Brenda White Wright, executive director of Girls Incorporated of Kingsport
will discuss economic empowerment through the use of sound financial management
practices. The seminar will address this issue as it relates to women teaching
their daughters about money management.

for Dealing with Abuse of the Elderly"

This series begins with "Stress Management in the Workplace." Dr. Susan Grover,
Chair of the ETSU Department of Family & Community Nursing, will provide insight
on how to deal with stress in the workplace.

All faculty and staff members are encouraged to invest in the future of our
women leaders of tomorrow by bringing their daughters into the workplace.

Tuesday, May 18, East Tennessee Room, Culp Center, 5:00 p.m.
Glenda Gray, certified public accountant with Thompson & Gray, PC, CPAs, will
be the second speaker in the series on personal investing. She will discuss
personal investing and its impact on the income tax system.

Thursday, May 20, Panhellenic Hall, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Staff of the Osteoporosis Center will conduct complimentary bone density screening
from the osteoporosis mobile unit. The mobile unit will be located in close
proximity to West and Panhellenic residence halls.
NOTABLE WOMEN'S
HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION DAYS
The first International Women's
Day was March 8, 1911.
On March 9, 1986, the
largest march for women's rights, at the time, occurred in Washington, D.C.
Jackie Mitchell, age
17, pitched an exhibition game against the New York Yankees and struck out
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig on March 20,1931.
Dr. Betty Cronin at
Swanson Foods created the first frozen dinner in an aluminum tray on March
25, 1954. More than 10 million sold the first year.
On March 28 in 1932,
Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo in record
time and on the same day in 1983, Dr. Sally Ride became the first American
woman in space as part of NASA's Challenger mission.
