GENDER DIFFERENCES VIDEO SERIES SLATED FOR OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER

Gender Differences in the Workplace videotape series is scheduled for consecutive weekly presentations during October and November. Please join us for any or all of the series of four workshops. The dates, times, and locations of these presentations are included in the WRC Calendar of Events on page 3.

Dr. Pat Heim, noted author and well-known consultant in management development and gender differences who received her Ph.D. in communication from the University of Colorado, has prepared a series of videotapes and workshops on the cultural differences unique to each gender in our society. Each of these cultures is functional within its own set of cultural norms, but problems may arise in the workplace because the differences in these two cultures are often invisible to us.

Dr. Heim is a dynamic speaker, using humor to provide insight into how gender culture affects us in the workplace, including some basic "rules" of each culture. She suggests strategies for using the best of both gender cultures to our advantage as an organization.

Each of Dr. Heim's tapes is 30 minutes in length. Her presentations are informative, entertaining, and productive for day-to-day application in your respective department or area.

This video series is co-sponsored by the Office of Women in Medicine and the Women's Resource Center.

ETSU COUNSELING CENTER DEDICATED TO SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS

The mission of the Counseling Center is to promote the mental health and personal growth of ETSU students through the provision of personal counseling, educational programs, career services, and psychiatric services. The Counseling Center provides short-term personal counseling services, which are free to all currently enrolled ETSU students. Center staff consists of three doctoral level psychologists, a master's level counselor, two psychiatric residents, and graduate assistants whom the senior staff supervises.

Under the direction of Dr. Gary Petiprin, common issues addressed through the Center include: improving relationships, managing unpleasant emotions, adjusting to college, managing self-esteem, ending substance abuse, resolving family issues, surviving grief and loss, and dealing with emotional trauma (i.e., psychological, physical or sexual abuse).

Due to the sensitive and personal nature of counseling, all counseling services are confidential. Counselors are bound both ethically and legally to maintain confidentiality within the limits of the law.

as long as 35

Should faculty and staff members need to assist a student regarding the services of the Counseling Center, it is helpful to note that an initial appointment may be obtained during the walk-in hours (Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - noon and 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.). At that time a counselor will meet with the student and make the appropriate referral, typically to a counselor on staff.

In addition to the short-term personal counseling services for students, the Counseling Center staff frequently conducts educational outreach programs that promote mental health and personal growth. Common topics include: stress management, communication skills, time management, healthy relationships, self-esteem, alcohol/drug abuse prevention, career decision-making, and sexual assault prevention. During Fall Semester 1999 a "Women's Issues" support group will be initiated through the Center.

For additional information on the services and programs provided by the Counseling Center please call (423) 439-4841 or visit its web site at http://www.etsu.edu/students/counsel/counsel.htm. Office hours during the fall and spring semesters are Monday, 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Summer office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m

1999 WOMEN'S EXPO "EVERYTHING FOR TODAY'S WOMAN!"

The 1999 Women's Expo "Everything for Today's Woman!", presented by the Kingsport Times-News, will be held October 16-17 at MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center. If you missed the 1998 Women's Expo you overlooked an event that provided a wide variety of information on 64 area businesses and nonprofit organizations that exhibited at the expo at MeadowView last September.

The 1998 expo presented a wonderful opportunity for women to become better informed about topics which affect their lives. More than 50 seminars were given at the event with a range of topics being covered, such as health and fitness, money matters, cosmetic surgery, plus various nontraditional categories like acupuncture and the Internet.

The Kingsport Times-News will promote the expo with an intensive multimedia campaign, using regional radio and television as well as newspaper advertisements in the Times-News. In addition, the Times-News will publish a special tabloid on the expo, which will be distributed to the full circulation of the Times-News on Friday, October 15.

On Saturday, October 16, hours for the expo will be 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, October 17, hours will be noon - 6:00 p.m. There is an admission fee of $3.00, but children 12 years of age and under are admitted free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the United Way of Greater Kingsport.

Consider making the 1999 Women's Expo part of your weekend activities on October 16 or 17. This is a wonderful opportunity to update yourself on the nonprofit and commercial businesses that provide education, services, and products to women of all ages in the region.
