About this Course Web Page
This web page is for the preprofessional writing course that I'm teaching this Fall, 1999, in the English department here at East Tennessee State University.
This is definitely NOT an online course, because students meet together in a real, physical space, where they actually talk with each other, and with me, face to face, twice a week. However, rather than submitting their writing on paper, students do all their writing on-line.
Since this is primarily a writing course, computer software instruction has been kept to a minimum. Students have each been assigned a subdirectory on the ETSU www server. In class they've learned to use basic "ftp" software that allows them to transfer files from personal computers to that server. Students have also learned that html is all "text-based," and they've learned a few basic html codes. But, in general, students have been encouraged to figure out html text editors, such as Netscape's Composer, on their own.
Most of the class meetings have been in workshop format, with students reviewing each other's drafts or doing exercises in small groups. This format has allowed us to focus on writing principles, while allowing students to work together to solve any html coding problems that arise.
Have a look at the students' web pages. They've been doing some fine work!
