Appalachian Trail Maintenance Trip Dates:
Saturdays, Nov. 13 and Nov. 20.
AT Maintenance Trip Arrangements; What to Bring; Notes on Conditions:
Arrangements --
The trail maintenance projects will be coordinated by Bill Stowell,
who directs the trail maintenance for Tennessee
Eastman Hiking Club. We will be installing water bars and steps
in
the world-famous Roan High Knob area.
On the appointed days, we'll meet in the Burger King parking lot
at the intersection of South Roan and University Parkway, next to the Comfort
Inn, at 8:15 a.m. There, we'll consolidate vehicles; you'll
sign waver forms, etc.
We are scheduled to meet with Tennessee Eastman Hiking Club members
and a group of Appalachian State students at the Carver's Gap parking lot
on Roan mountain at 9:30 sharp.
(The Appy State students are enrolled in an introductory writing
and literature class for for first year students in the Wautaga
College, which is an interdisciplinary program. The course is
being taught this semester with an environmental focus. Students
have read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, which is about the
Appalachian Trail, along with other environment-related readings.)
What to Bring --
Lunch
A quart of water
Warm clothes, in layers
Boots
Work gloves
An extra pair of dry socks and a shirt
TP (yes, this means what you think it means)
Notes on Conditions --
Be prepared to get sweaty and muddy.
Keep in mind that we'll be working at 6,000 feet elevation. It's
usually colder up on the mountain than here in town, and the temperature
can vary a great deal over the course of a day.
In general, it's best to avoid cotton clothes against your skin, because
when cotton gets wet it does not keep you warm.
