WEEK 1  (Aug 25, 27, 29)  Wednesday: Read "CHAPTER LV. OF SMELS AND ODORS," from Montaigne's Essays, Florio's translation (1603); "The Price We Pay" by Mayblum in Gould p.213; "Word on the Street" by Price and Hudson-Price in Gould 267.
Friday:  Read "Matriculation Fixation" by Queenan in Gould p.276; "Inside the Bunker" by Sack in Gould p.280.
WEEK 2  (Sep 3,  5)  Wednesday:  Read Brief Candle, by H.; "Why Literature?" by Llosa in Gould p.295; "The Meaning of Timothy McVeigh" by Vidal in Gould p.309; "Out of the Ordinary" by Murphy in Gould p.232; "Merced" by Ofri in Gould p.237.
Friday:  Read "Winner Take Nothing" by Cooper in Gould p.24; "Turning Point" by Chelminski in Gould p.13.
WEEK 3  (Sep 8, 10, 12) Monday: Draft of creative essay due, with copies for writing groups.
Wednesday: Bring in an article or book related to your essay topic.  Bring Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, if you've already purchased it.
Friday: Read "Web Writing Workshop" and "Write Like You Talk" (both articles are well-written discussions of writing style, by California-based web-design and writing consultant, Ron Scheer).  Print out both articles and bring them to class along with a copy of your working draft for the creative essay.
WEEK 4  (Sep 15, 17, 19)
Monday: Creative essay due.  Read Larson, 1-47.
Wednesday: Finish Part I, Larson.  Friday:  Part II, Larson.
WEEK 5  (Sep 22, 24, 26)  Monday: Part III, Larson.  Wednesday: Part IV, Larson.  Friday: Topic proposal, for academic essay.
WEEK 6  (Sep 29, Oct 1, 3)  Monday:  Frederick Douglass in Andrews (229-327).
WEEK 7  (Oct 6, 8, 10) Monday:  Mark Twain in Andrews (328-412).
WEEK 8  (Oct 13, 15, 17) Monday:  Fall break!  Wednesday:  Zitkala-Sa in Andrews (413-62).  Friday:  Du Bois, "Forethought," "Of Our Spiritual Strivings."
WEEK 9  (Oct 20, 22, 24) Monday:  Finish Du Bois.
WEEK 10  (Oct 27, 29, 31) Monday: Midterm exam.  Click here for study guide.
Friday: Read an excerpt from Franklin in Andrews, p. 135-62.
WEEK 11  (Nov 3, 5, 7)  Monday:  First half of Dykemen.
WEEK 12  (Nov 10, 12, 14) Monday: Draft of academic essay due, with copies for writing groups. Wednesday:  Finish Dykeman.  Friday: Read There's A Skeleton In A Trainyard In East Tennessee, by Joan Vannorsdall Schroeder, in Blue Ridge Country magazine's online edition; optional: "The Artist in the Garden: George Cooke and the Ideology of Fine Arts Painting in Antebellum Georgia," by K. E. O'Donnell.
WEEK 13  (Nov 17, 19, 21) Monday: Academic essay due.
Friday:  "The Anti-Jefferson" in Gould p.188-212.  Review excerpt from Franklin in Andrews, p. 135-62.
WEEK 14  (Nov 24, 26) Monday: Read "My Father's Brain" in Gould p.88-110; "The Lion in Winter" in Gould p.144-64.
WEEK 15  (Dec 1, 3, 5) Monday: Read "College: The End of a Golden Age" in Gould p.219-31, and "Matriculation Fixation" in Gould p. 276-79.  Read chapter from Leaving Atlanta (2003) by Tayari Jones (handout).
Wednesday: Revision of best essay due, for publication on the web.  Friday: Read your classmates' essays from the web.
