WEEK 1  (Aug 30, Sep 1, 3)  Weds: What is an "essay"?  Read "CHAPTER LV. OF SMELS AND ODORS," from Montaigne's Essays, Florio's translation (1603); print that essay and bring it to class.  Also read "Backlash Babies" in ASME p226 and "Lying in Wait" ASME p130.  Fri: "Three Girls" ASME p368; "Wild in the Parks" ASME p109.
WEEK 2  (Sep 8 and 10) Mon: Labor Day, no class. Weds: "The Boy Who Loved Transit" ASME p340; "The Most Dangerous Beauty" ASME p2.  Fri: "Lucky Jim" ASME p319.  Also read My Friend, My Hero: A Murderer by Jennifer Cunningham (Lit Nonfiction Fall 03), and Brief Candle by H (Writing: Teaching & Theory Fall 02).
WEEK 3  (Sep 13, 15, 17)  Mon: Draft of creative essay due, with copies for writing groups.  Also read and bring to class the following, from the writing center web site at the University of North Carolina:  Responding to Other Peoples' Writing; Response Worksheet.  Weds: "Home Alone" ASME p262; "U.S. Confidential" ASME 280.  Fri: Bring to class a text you might like to incorporate into your creative essay.
WEEK 4  (Sep 20, 22, 24)  Mon: Creative essay due.  Read Larson through page 205.  Weds: We continue discussing Larson.  Friday: Be sure to read the short essay on "Notes and Sources" in Larson, page 391-96.
WEEK 5  (Sep 27, 29, Oct 1)  Mon: Finish reading Larson.  Weds: Read the first 5 chapters of Dykeman.  Fri: Class was cancelled. (KOD 10/4/04).
WEEK 6  (Oct 4, 6, 8)  Mon: Review for exam 1.  Wednesday: Exam 1.
WEEK 7  (Oct 11, 13, 15) Mon: Frederick Douglass in Andrews (229-327).
WEEK 8  (Oct 20, 22)  Mon: Fall Break!  Weds: Mark Twain in Andrews (328-412).  Fri: Topic proposal due.
WEEK 9  (Oct 25, 27)  Mon: Zitkala-Sa in Andrews (413-62).  Weds: Bring DuBois book to class.  Fri, Oct 29: Class cancelled.
WEEK 10  (Nov 1, 3, 5) Mon: Read all of DuBois.  Fri:  Bring a book related to your academic essay.
WEEK 11  (Nov 8, 10)  Mon: Bring a book related to your academic essay.  Weds: Bring a text cited by the book you brought friday and monday.  Fri, Nov 12: Class cancelled.
WEEK 12  (Nov 15, 17, 19) Monday: Draft of academic essay due.  Weds and Fri: In-class screening, "The Fog of War," a documentary film by Errol Morris, 2003, running time 107 min.
WEEK 13  (Nov 22, 24)  Monday: Academic essay due.  Weds: Bring in the essay that you think is your best.  Fri, Nov 26: Thanksgiving holiday.
