Wednesday, November 05, 2008JOHNSON CITY – Award-winning pianist Dr. Chih-Long Hu will perform in the Powell Piano Series at East Tennessee State University Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall.
Hu will present two masterworks of the piano literature, “Sonata No. 2, Op. 36” and “Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39” by Rachmaninov, the beloved Russian composer and virtuoso pianist of the 20th century. The program also includes Haydn’s “Sonata in A-flat Major, Hob. XVI: 46” and Schubert’s “Impromptu in G-flat major, Op. 90, No. 3.”
Hu, an assistant professor of piano in the ETSU Department of Music, has performed extensively as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in Asia, Europe and North America. He has released one album, “Formosa Caprices,” through Blue Griffin Recording Inc., and two other solo albums featuring works by Ravel, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov.
Hu joined the ETSU faculty in August 2006 and holds a D.M.A. degree from the University of Michigan and his B.S. and M.F.A. degrees from Taipei National University.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The Powell Piano Series began in the fall of 2007 in honor of Jim and Sandy Powell and is dedicated to the advancement of solo piano performance by outstanding national and international artists.
