Monday, November 17, 2008D.P. Culp Auditorium Dr. David Redmon, a documentary filmmaker, author, and educator, will present a free public lecture entitled Global Disparity in the Pleasure Industry as part of International Education Week 2008 at ETSU. The lecture will be held Monday, Nov. 17 in the Martha Street Culp Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Redmon grew up in rural Texas where he began his higher education career at Tarrant County Junior College. He graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.A. in Sociology, and went on to receive an M.A. in Sociology from Texas Woman’s University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from The State University of New York at Albany.
Redmon has been actively involved in college classrooms since 1997, teaching at various universities including Texas Christian University, St. Joseph’s College, Pratt Institute, Emerson College, Gettysburg College, Southwestern University, and Texas Woman’s University. He regularly is invited to university campuses and conferences to present his academic research. Redmon has authored a number of articles in publications such as Adbusters, Deviant Behavior, Visual Studies, and Blackwell.
Redmon’s craft is writing, directing, filming, and producing documentaries, most notably: Mardi Gras: Made in China (2005), Kamp Katrina (2007) Intimidad (2008) and Tin Man (release 2009). His films have received over 25 awards from various film festivals around the world, and have been nominated for the Grand Jury award at the Sundance Film Festival. A number of Redmon’s films have premiered on Sundance Channel, Documentary Channel and Link TV. He recently began a production and distribution company, Carnivalesque Films, with Ashley Sabin.
Redmon’s most recent film, Twisted, is his most ambitious project to date. This film documents human trafficking throughout seven different countries by following a woman who imports young teenage girls into the United States and subsequently involves them in high-end prostitution. Redmon is also completing a book about globalization in the pleasure industry, to be published by Norton press.
