Friday, December 19, 2008JOHNSON CITY—B. Carroll Reece Museum on the Johnson City campus of East Tennessee State University closed to the public on Dec. 19 and will not reopen until Jan. 15.
According to Theresa Burchett, the museum director, the extended holiday closing will permit the museum staff to concentrate on important tasks that require a number of hours to complete.
“We are beginning the first phase of a collection inventory,” Burchett said. “When one considers inventorying over 20,000 artifacts, the process might seem daunting. But doing work in phases allows us to accomplish important ‘behind-the-scenes’ work.”
She adds, “We will also be focused on digitizing the collection and artifact cleaning. These initiatives are some of the nuts-and-bolts of any museum’s ‘best practices’ — not glamorous, but necessary and important.”
“Since we are always mindful of our responsibility to our constituents,” she concludes, “we carefully considered when would be the best time to begin this important work without adversely impacting the public’s access to the museum.”
