Wednesday, January 28, 2009JOHNSON CITY – For many people, a major hurdle to adopting a regular exercise routine is taking that first step. A new research study at East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine is offering local men and women the opportunity to participate in an eight-week program that involves one-hour sessions of resistance training exercises with a personal coach five days per week.
The cost of the personal training sessions is free, and those who complete the study will receive $500.
“We are looking for people, including those who are obese as well as those not overweight, who currently are not exercising regularly,” said Dr. Charles Stuart, an endocrinologist with ETSU Physicians and Associates and professor of Internal Medicine. “At the beginning and conclusion of the study, we will take a small muscle biopsy and look for any changes that occur in the genes within the muscle which we’ve identified as markers for diabetes.”
Stuart and his research team are recruiting adults at high risk for diabetes and under the age of 55. The subjects must meet other criteria, including being overweight and having a family history of type 2 diabetes. In addition, an equal number of participants not at risk for diabetes will also be recruited for similar training. These subjects cannot be obese nor have a family history of diabetes.
Special measurements will be taken at the beginning and conclusion of the study.
The project is funded through a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Other ETSU investigators are Drs. Mike Stone and Mike Ramsey from the ETSU Center of Excellence in Sport Science and Coach Education.
