Karen Kornweibel earned her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Texas
at Austin with concentrations in Latin American Literature, African American Literature,
and 19th Century Russian Prose. She joined the ETSU English faculty in 2007 after
tenure track positions in English at Stephen F. Austin State University and African
American Studies at Ohio University. Her research focuses on the literature of the
African Diaspora in the Americas and more specifically on African American and Afro-Cuban
literature. Her most recent publication is the 2018 monograph Writing for Inclusion:
Literature, Race, and National Identity in 19th Century Cuba and the United States.
At ETSU, she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on American, African American,
Latin American, and European literature. Dr. Kornweibel currently serves as the Director
of the University and Midway Honors Scholars programs in ETSU’s Honors College.
