WGSS 2020 Embraces Equity (internationalwomensday.com)

Celebrating International Women’s Day!
Since the early 20th century, the world has celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8—and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program has celebrated it ever since the establishment of its course “Women in Global Perspective.” Students in that course have honored the day by sharing their knowledge publicly with the ETSU community—through tabling, public lectures, or, more recently, through creation of sharable web pages.
The topic of each web page listed here is an NGO (nongovernmental organization) that promotes feminist values and women’s equality through advocacy and support services. Some are based in a single country while others are transnational. Students choose the organizations based on their own interests: for instance, problems of violence against women, reproductive freedom, the rights of gender minorities, economic disparities, recognition in media, children’s rights, and human rights writ large.
Two large organizations promote IWD. International Women’s Day has announced its 2023 theme as “Embrace Equity.” Their purpose is to forge an inclusive gender equal world and celebrate women’s achievements in technology, the arts, sports, and activism. The United Nations’ UNWomen is publicizing a very specific theme: “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.” Raising the level of women’s education in the digital age is an important step for empowering women and girls worldwide.
