Edward A. Baryla, Jr., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at East Tennessee State University. He has served as department chair since July 2004.
Professor Baryla attended the University of Scranton and received a B.A. degree in Public Administration in 1982 and an MBA with a finance concentration in 1990. Ed attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned an MA in Finance in 1994 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Finance in 1995.
Ed has been at ETSU since 1995. In 2000, he was the co-recipient of the College of Business Faculty Excellence Award for Outstanding New Faculty. He has also served as the advisor to the Students of Finance Association and University Golf Club at various times.
In 2007, Professor Baryla was appointed as the educator member of the Tennessee Real Estate Appraiser Commission by then-Governor Bredesen. He was reappointed in 2010 and served until 2014.
Dr. Baryla teaches Business Finance, Applied Corporate Finance, Real Estate Finance, and Capital Budgeting. Previously, he taught banking, real estate appraisals and principles, investments, personal finance and international finance. Professor Baryla has varied research interests and has published in the Journal of Housing Research, Real Estate Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Research, Education Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and the Journal of Financial Planning. His business experience includes working capital management and corporate credit management.
