Welcome to East Tennessee State University and the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. The James H. Quillen College of Medicine was created by the Tennessee legislature in March 1974 to help alleviate a critical shortage of primary care physicians.
Graduate medical education (GME) includes all of the medical, surgical and other specialty and subspecialty residency programs and fellowships offered by the Quillen College of Medicine. Hereafter, all clinical training programs are referred to in this handbook as residency programs. All clinical trainees, whether residents or fellows, are referred to in this handbook as residents.
The College of Medicine provides graduate medical education programs that meet the standards established by the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and its designated Residency Review Committees. The Colleges institutional oversight of residency programs is conducted through the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) and the Executive Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.
The College of Medicine is affiliated with the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, at Mountain Home, Tennessee, Mountain States Health Alliance - Johnson City Medical Center, Franklin Woods Community Hospital, and Woodridge Psychiatric Hospital in Johnson City, Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, and Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol.
The College of Medicine currently offers accredited residencies in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and General Surgery. Fellowships are offered in Infectious Disease, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonary, and Rural Medicine.
