I went to a small liberal arts school, there were only 400 kids in my graduating class, and was used to having a really close relationship with my professors and my peers. What I loved about Quillen was the close knit community among the students and the fact that I wouldn't feel like just a number to my teachers.
Juggling School and Family
I thought being in a long distance relationship would be the hardest part about going to medical school. But when I got here and saw that so many of my classmates were in the same situation it made it so much easier. The balancing act of making sure I still have Skype dates while also making time for my friends has been such an easy adjustment because a lot of your friends are doing the same thing and they get it. While it’s hard to be 500 miles away from my family and my significant other, it’s nice to be able to go home on breaks (homework free!) and spend time with them without the guilt of "oh I should be studying right now!"
Life Outside the Classroom
There is a lot more to do in Johnson City than I would have ever imagined! There is usually always something going on downtown, whether it’s a morning bike ride or a food truck festival, and the night life is actually very active. One of the best parts is that if you find something that you want to do there is a 99% chance that a classmate wants to do it too!
Living in Northeast Tennessee
Being from such a big, flat, and humid city like Memphis, I was not prepared for how much my classmates would like to hike, bike, and be outside. However, this has become one of my favorite parts of living in East TN. I have hiked more in the past year than I did in my first 24 years of life.
Words of Wisdom: Don't be afraid to put yourself out there or ask someone for help.
