ETSU’s Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center (MCC) is hosting several programs celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in the week surrounding his birthday. 

The MCC kicked off celebrations with the MLK Legacy Program on Jan. 13, including remarks from MCC Director Dr. Kevin Brooks, ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland, Pride Center Coordinator Bethanie Dye and other representatives from different campus departments. 

ETSU’s MLK programs will continue throughout the month: 

  • The ETSU community is invited to the 24th Annual Prayer Breakfast on Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, with ETSU’s Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Dr. Keith Johnson as the keynote speaker.  
  • On MLK Day, Jan. 20, ETSU faculty and students will participate in a Day of Service at the Carver Recreation Center in Johnson City from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  
  • The following day, ETSU staff and students are welcome to attend a cake-cutting celebration on the first floor of the D.P. Culp Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
  • On Jan. 28, the MCC will host “King’s Beloved Community,” featuring the ETSU Gospel Choir, a candle lighting and remarks from Brooks. The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room 272 of the Culp Center. 
  • Also on Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. in the Culp Center ballroom, motivational speaker Ken E. Nwadike Jr. will speak about his journey from homelessness to being a successful entrepreneur and embracing one’s inner strength to create a compassionate and just world. 

The MCC will also host events throughout Black History Month in February, beginning with an opening event featuring speaker Bettie Mae Fikes at 5 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the Culp Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.
