From its rich storytelling traditions to its distinctive musical heritage, Appalachia embodies a unique and influential way of life.  

Few institutions worldwide have done more to highlight, preserve and extend that heritage than the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University. 

The center will mark its 40th anniversary with a special celebration at the Reece Museum on Tuesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. 

“The center was founded to preserve and uplift the voices and traditions of Appalachia,” said Dr. Ron Roach, chair of the Department of Appalachian Studies and director of the center. “Over 40 years, we’ve seen that mission grow into something much greater. Today, we are not only preserving the past but also using the lessons of Appalachia to inform and inspire the future.” 

The evening will feature a reception and a panel discussion highlighting the center’s history. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., panelists Roach, Dr. Ted Olson, Dr. Roberta Herrin and Dr. Jean Haskell will share their experiences and insights from their time with the center. A dynamic Q&A will follow.  

For four decades, the center has served as a cornerstone for Appalachian research, cultural preservation and community engagement.  

From launching the nation’s first four-year degree in Bluegrass, Old-Time and Roots Music Studies to publishing the “Encyclopedia of Appalachia,” the center has consistently championed Appalachia’s unique heritage while fostering innovative education and groundbreaking research. Since 2001, the center has overseen the Appalachian Collegiate Research Initiative, a program funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission that empowers students  across the region to conduct community-based research and present their findings in Washington, D.C., each year.
