ETSU offers pathways with Southwestern Community College

A new partnership between East Tennessee State University and Southwestern Community College is opening doors for students in rural North Carolina, making it easier than ever to turn an associate degree into a bachelor’s degree in fields like nursing, allied health and business.
Southwestern Community College is a public community college located in Sylva, North Carolina. Since 1964, it has provided affordable higher education and career training to residents of Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and the Qualla Boundary, offering more than 40 degree programs and workforce development opportunities.
“We are excited to support students’ professional and personal goals by providing a seamless pathway for those pursuing associate degrees in technical areas to earn a bachelor's degree in applied science at ETSU,” said Dr. Jill LeRoy-Frazier, chair of ETSU’s Division of Cross-Disciplinary Studies.
ETSU’s Associate Provost for Curriculum Dr. Bill Flora met with Southwestern President Dr. Don Tomas and Vice President of Instruction and Student Services Dr. Barbara Putman for a formal signing event on April 21 on Southwestern’s campus.

- AAS Emergency Medical Science to B.S. Allied Health Leadership
- AAS Human Services Technology to B.S. Human Services with Trauma and Resilience Minor

- AAS Nursing to B.S. Nursing

“We are excited about our partnership with Southwestern Community College that expands program offerings for students in our region in the human services major and trauma and resilience minor. The fields of human services and trauma and resilience are not simply career paths, but a calling to make a significant difference in the lives of individuals and communities,” said Dr. Phyllis Thompson, chair of Counseling and Human Services at ETSU.
