Aaron's Story of Service

Aaron Fregoso always knew he wanted to go into health care. As a first-generation student, he was determined to make that dream a reality. As a nursing major at ETSU and trumpet player in the Marching Bucs, Aaron’s journey is shaped by a deep commitment to helping others and a relentless drive to serve his community.

"I started with general elective classes, then I took an anatomy and physiology course, and that was it—I fell in love with the field," he recalls. Encouraged by a professor, Aaron decided to go for it. “I finally applied for the nursing program, and I’m so glad I did."

Navigating college as a first-generation student came with challenges, but Aaron credits ETSU’s support system for helping him succeed. “The financial support from scholarships and tutoring was essential,” he says. Job shadowing and clinical placements also helped shape his aspirations. "Through these experiences, I’ve learned that my true passion is caring for people."

One of the most impactful opportunities has been his internship at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. “ETSU has opened doors for me, one of them being the VA, where I’ve had the opportunity to serve some of the nation’s heroes,” he shares.

Aaron’s dedication extends beyond the hospital. As a Supplemental Instruction leader, he mentors first-year nursing students, helping them navigate the challenges he once faced. “It’s amazing to be able to give back and support those who are just starting their journey, just like I was,” he says.

“I hope that the impact I leave is a lasting one,” Aaron reflects. “I want the work I do here to inspire others to pay it forward and create a community of care that goes beyond just the classroom or the hospital.”

“I have a clearer image of what I want my goals to be—to care for people, to show them love and support during their most difficult situations.”

His commitment to serving others was put to the test in the fall of 2024 when Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina and parts of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, bringing catastrophic flooding and widespread destruction. Less than two months before the ETSU Marching Bucs were set to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Aaron spent time at Unicoi County High School—helping distribute supplies and supporting survivors. When the Marching Bucs finally reached Herald Square, the performance took on a deeper meaning—it was a moment of resilience, a symbol of hope for a region reeling from loss.

“It was more than just a performance for us,” he says. “We were playing for the people back home who have been through so much. To be able to represent them on a national stage was something I’ll never forget.”

For Aaron, music and service are deeply connected—both require dedication, heart, and a willingness to give to others. Whether through the sound of his trumpet or the steady hands of a future nurse, he remains driven by the same goal: to uplift those around him, no matter where life takes him next.
