Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in the coordination of histological laboratory procedures and performing related work as required.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Performs histological work such as cutting, staining and mounting specimens of human or animal tissue.

Conducts routine laboratory experiments.

Assists faculty, residents and research assistants within the department.

Serves as liaison between laboratory clients and physicians.

Monitors quality control of laboratory operations to ensure compliance with all Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) conditions and regulations required by the Tennessee State Department of Health.

Maintains the laboratory policy and procedures manual.

Purchases laboratory supplies and equipment.

Maintains chain of evidence procedures for medical/legal specimens.

Secures tissue, blocks and slides for the laboratory.

Provides histologic support for intra/extra departmental research programs.

Documents maintenance and service of all laboratory equipment.

Coordinates the operation of the anatomic pathology information system within the laboratory.

Provides histologic and cytologic support for the centralized laboratory.

Performs other work as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of and proficiency in a broad range of histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescent and cytochemical procedures.

Knowledge of techniques involved in cutting, staining and mounting tissue specimens.

Knowledge of the use of reagents, stains and chemical solutions.

Knowledge of basic specimen analysis and routine laboratory experiments.

Knowledge of the use of equipment involved in routine histologic laboratory procedures.

Ability to trim, fix in fixing solution, dehydrate and place specimen in paraffin.

Ability to use microtone to section prepared tissue.

Ability to correctly use reagents, stains and chemical solutions.

Ability to maintain an adequate inventory of materials, supplies and chemicals.

Ability to use and operate required laboratory tools and equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with students and other employees.

Recommended Qualifications

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school; ASCP certification; and five years of histotechnology experience.
