ETSU attorney selected for Fulbright Scholarship

Ed Kelly

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 16, 2015) – Edward J. Kelly, University Counsel for East Tennessee State University, is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship award.

Kelly will spend six months in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he will teach in the areas of negotiation, mediation and arbitration at Mykolos Romeris University’s College of Mediation.  During this time he will also collaborate on alternative dispute resolution matters with colleagues in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

“The most common question I receive when people hear that I was awarded a Fulbright to Lithuania is, ‘Of all places, why Lithuania?’” Kelly said.  “The simple fact is that Lithuania is a beautiful country with an amazing history, rich tradition and friendly people.”

Kelly joined ETSU as University Counsel in 1997. He also currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Appalachian College of Law in Grundy.  From 1979-97, he was Assistant to the President at the State University of New York College at Brockport.

The goal of the federal Fulbright Program, which operates in more than 155 countries, is to increase the mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.  Participants are chosen for their academic merit and leadership and have the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Approximately 1,200 U.S. scholars receive Fulbright awards annually.
