JOHNSON CITY (May 20) – Dr. Joy Wachs, director of the University Honors Scholars and Midway Honors Scholars programs in East Tennessee State University’s Honors College, was honored recently at the 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) College of Nursing as one of the school’s 50 Distinguished Alumni.

Wachs graduated from UWM with a master’s degree in Community /Occupational Health Nursing in 1980.

Wachs says, “When I began my career as an occupational health nurse (OHN) at UWM, very few OHNs held advanced degrees and UWM prepared me to practice as a corporate nurse, mentor authors and graduate students and complete both agricultural health nursing fellowship and qualitative research certificate programs. As a result, I have been awarded both Fellow of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses designation and the AAOHN Lillian G. Carter Humanitarian Award. The occupational health nursing program at UWM was one-of-a-kind and launched a career that at the time I could not have dreamed possible.”
