JOHNSON CITY (July 11, 2018) – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum at East Tennessee State University will partner with the George L. Carter Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society to lead an overnight Labor Day weekend train excursion on three West Virginia railroads Sept. 1-3.
The group will board a motor coach from ETSU on Saturday, Sept. 1. Upon arrival in Elkins, West Virginia, they will enjoy dinner followed by entertainment at the Greatest Show on Rails live production before staying overnight at the Isaac Jackson Hotel. On Sunday, the group will ride the Cass Scenic Railroad, established in 1901 to bring timber to the mill using some of the same-geared Shay locomotives that are still in operation today. Passengers will stop at Whittaker Station before arriving at Old Spruce to transfer to the Cheat Mountain Salamander diesel passenger train named for a small, endangered amphibian whose habitat is the river of the same name. The group will return to Elkins to attend the Gandy Dancer Dinner Theatre.
On Monday, Sept. 3, passengers will board a bus to Durbin, West Virginia, to ride aboard the Durbin Rocket powered by a rare Heisler 6, a geared steam locomotive pulling 1920s era passenger cars and two cabooses. Following the ride, the group will travel back to Johnson City.
