JOHNSON CITY (September 3, 2019) – East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine honored two of its distinguished alumnae, Dr. Lisa Piercey and Dr. Jessica Tuberty, at the Department of Pediatrics’ annual alumni reception and awards event held last month at the Millennium Center.

Both Piercy and Tuberty graduated from Quillen in 2002 and also completed their pediatric residency at Quillen in 2005.

Piercey received the Leadership Award. Earlier this year, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee appointed her as the 14th Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Health. As Commissioner, Piercey leads the primary agency of state government responsible for public health.

“Dr. Piercey was chosen for her leadership and her advocacy for children in the state of Tennessee,” said Dr. Dawn Tuell, interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

While she was a student at Quillen, Piercey was introduced to Child Abuse Pediatrics, a specialty she has focused on throughout her career.

Tuberty received the Legacy Award for her contributions.

“Dr. Tuberty was chosen because she started the Reach Out and Read program at ETSU Pediatrics, which then grew into the ReadNPlay program, a nationally recognized program that promotes healthy active living in children,” Tuell said.
