Dr. Liang Wang Presents in China on Obesity and Nutrition

Dr. Liang Wang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the ETSU College of Public Health, presented at the 1st International Congress on Childhood Obesity and Hypertension, held in Beijing from May 29 - 31, 2015. Dr. Wang presented, “A novel cross-peer health promotion program for obesity prevention in adolescents in high school.”  He also served as judge for the presentation awards during the congress.  The congress was hosted by the Chinese Hypertension League (CHL), Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), Beijing Health Bureau Office for Childhood Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (BJBU-CCDP office), and organized by the Capital Institute of Pediatrics (CIP).

As with other countries in the world, non-communicable diseases (NCD) are the leading cause of death in China, and factors such as obesity and hypertension are increasing in both the young and old. 

1st International Congress on Childhood Obesity and Hypertension was held, in part, to develop collaboration between Chinese and international organizations working on these issues.   

The congress covered topics including childhood obesity, hypertension and metabolic disorders, genetic and molecular research, epidemiologic research, screening and diagnostic techniques, health risk assessment, clinical treatment, fetal and developmental risk factors, exercises and diets, related psychological problems, prevention, and policy issues.

While in China, Dr. Wang also presented at the 12th Biennial National Nutrition Science Conference (CNSC) in Beijing. The conference was organized by the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS).  The conference brought together the leadership of the North America Chinese Society for Nutrition (NACSN) and CNS around the theme of “Nutrition for A Healthy Life.” Dr. Wang was selected to present at a session entitled “Obesity and Nutrition” during the conference.

In addition, Dr. Wang was selected to participate in the 5th Chinese Nutrition Leadership Programme held in Guangzhou, a joint training program of the CNS and International Union of Nutritional Sciences, that aims at fostering an international focus among future leaders in the field of nutrition, and invited to be the commentator for the 2nd Westlake Summer Youth Forum on Health Policy and System Sciences in Hangzhou that aims at promoting innovations in health policy research among China’s next generation of researchers.
