Aaron Salwan
Community Pharmacy Practice Research Fellowship
Name: Aaron Salwan
Hometown: Stow, Ohio
Pharmacy school: Ohio Northern University, PharmD
Postgrad experience: Community Pharmacy Practice Research Fellowship at Gatton
What brought you to Gatton? A desire to help fight the prescription drug and opioid epidemic and find community pharmacy interventions to help those with substance use disorders.
What was a defining moment for you here?
A defining moment for me so far has been being able to interact with patients who are struggling with substance use disorders as well as mental illnesses. For the majority of patients, it has been incredibly rewarding to see patients progress over time after we initiate treatment, and it is an amazing experience to get to know patients and their stories. I work with patients who have HIV as well as mental illness, and it is fascinating to me that HIV is no longer their biggest problem with the advancement in medicine.
Why is residency experience important for future pharmacists? Residency experience is important for future pharmacists because it allows you to explore everything that pharmacists can do. If you would have told me I would be doing a research fellowship a few years ago, I would have said you’re crazy, but it really has been an amazing experience. I also love being connected with a college of pharmacy and having the opportunity to teach and precept students.
Anything else you’d like to mention?
Take advantage of your opportunities and treat your patients like you would your grandma!
