Non-Credit Instruction Class

Non-credit instruction through the ETSU Campus Recreation department consists of various classes and workshops for the ETSU Community that are not for academic credit. However, in many cases upon successful completion of a course and its requirements, a certification will be granted. For most classes there will be a fee to register, which covers the cost of instruction and/or materials. Types of classes include, but are not limited to CPR/AED, First Aid, Lifeguard, Kayak Roll School, Climbing Wall Instructor, Wilderness First Aid and various types of Group Fitness certifications. Listed below are the classes we offer and during which semester we offer them, for more details please check back at a later time.

How to register for Non-Credit Instruction Classes: Registration forms will be posted here when registration opens for each corresponding class. You can print one off and fill it out, or come get one at the CPA Member Services Desk and submit it with your payment to successfully register for a class. We accept Cash, Check or ID Bucs.

 Courses Offered: 

American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Classes

Learn how to properly respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. In the classroom, you will have the opportunity to learn and interact with an instructor who will guide you through hands-on practice of lifesaving skills.

Class Details:

  • CPR/AED: April 13th 6-10pm
  • First Aid: April 14th 6-9pm
  • Registration opens on Wednesday, March 30th, and closes Tuesday, April 12th at noon
  • Class will be held in the Back Half of the Multipurpose Room

Beginner Kayak Instruction

Whether you are a first-timer or refreshing your skills, this class is perfect for learning how to maneuver a kayak in the water. It includes 5 lessons in the CPA pool and a kayaking river trip on a Saturday in April.

Class Details:

  • March 24th - April 21st, Thursdays only, from 7:00-8:30pm
  • There will be 5 sessions in the pool, followed by a Saturday day trip (day trip date to be determined)
  • Registration opens on Monday, February 29th and closes Wednesday, March 23rd at noon

American Canoe Association Level 4: Swiftwater Rescue

Learn how to recognize and avoid common river hazards, execute self-rescue techniques and perform rescue techniques for distressed paddlers. Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple, commonly used skills. Techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer, such as strainers, rescue vest applications, entrapments and pins, are also practiced. Scenarios will provide an opportunity for participants to practice their skills both individually and within a team/group context.

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Become a lifeguard and learn how to save lives in the water. The class is through the American Red Cross and is offered twice a semester. The class is open to both ETSU affiliated personnel and community members.

RAD (Rape Aggression Defense)

This is a 12hr Basic Physical Defense class that utilizes the R.A.D. manual where students will be involved in a discussion of risk reduction strategies, date rape, continuum of survival, defensive strategies and the basic principles of defense. We discuss the pros and cons of defensive weaponry, how to develop a defensive mindset, understanding offensive and defensive postures, recognizing vulnerable locations and utilizing personal weapons.

Swim Lessons
The ETSU Campus Recreation Swim Lesson Program varies in ages from students and staff to children from the ages of 6 months - 12 years old. We offer Group Lessons for ages 3 - 12. We also offer a Water Babies Class for ages 6 months to 32 months old.  We also offer private lessons for all ages, with morning, noon, evening and weekend times available for private instruction. All instructors are trained through the BCPA based on American Red Cross Swim Level Skills. 
Private lessons are open to only ETSU students, staff, and faculty.
Group Lessons are open to everyone.

Private Lessons:  Private lessons consist of 6 thirty minute lessons.  They are held during open swim times.  Dates and times are determined by availability of participants and our instructors.

Wilderness First Aid and CPR

If you plan to spend time in the backcountry you need to be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two or three-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel and work in the outdoors. This course is pre-approved by such organizations as: the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies.

Red Cross Life Guard Re-Certification

   Extend your lifeguard certification for another 2 years. This class will practice lifesaving skills in the water and is open to ETSU-affiliated personnel and community members.
