Overview of Seminar Series

All students are welcome. We have 8 Seminars, 2 College Success Seminars, 2 Self-Care Seminars, and 1 Professional Development Seminar this semester. You will meet Rockstar student leaders and  Facutly to provide you tips and advises. These are introductory seminars through examplery and personal experiences who share with students.

Goals of Seminars

To increase research opportunities in your field of interest and to perform your own research, to maximize your career options through research, to become better consumers of research, and to encourage respectful, evidence-based dialog around research related topics

All students are welcome. There will be 8 sessions in this seminar series during the spring semester. You will meet Rockstar student researchers and Research Icons - Faculty researchers to provide you tips and advises. These are introductory seminars through exemplary researchers and their field of interest to share with students.

    Help me I'm stuck and I need to get out!  Get out of my own head, my own mind, my own thoughts-that is! Ever find yourself feeling anxious, feeling all the weight and tense pressure from classes, school, work, parents, media, and life just piling up causing your mind to be a whirlwind of confusion?  You are not alone.  In this class we will discuss and engage in conversations about what makes us feel stressed and ways that we can identify various techniques to reduce the stress and better manage our thoughts, our feelings and level of anxiety experienced by the weight and pressures of our own world.  Just breathe!

    Just like an athlete practices and develops the skills to be the best, studying smarter is a time management strategy a student can practice and develop the skills to succeed. In this seminar, upperclass students will share basic effective ways to manage your time, study, learn, understand and analyze complex concepts and communicate in and outside of classroom.

    As you prepare to graduate and start living your best life, come and participate in a professional development series that will position you for success.  The “Living Your Best Life,” professional development series will cover topics such as branding, crafting an elevator pitch, interview skills, networking, and securing the bag.

    Your instructors will be submitting MIDTERM GRADES at this time. It is also a time to evaluate one’s own weekly schedule – time management, study skills/habits, usage of the tutoring services, communications with the instructor and advisor. What can one do, change, adapt or continue the same during the remaining semester to achieve your goals?

  • Preparing for Finals - Wednesday, Nov. 2, 5:00 pmMCC Meeting Room

    This seminar provides strategies on how and when to prepare to successfully take tests which involves four critical steps: (1) preparing well in advance of the day of the test, (2) taking the test in an organized way, (3) managing stress, and (4) learning from the test after it is over. 

  • Professional Development:  Designing Your Life (Session 1 of 2) - Wednesday, Nov. 9, 5:00 pmMCC Meeting Room

    This two part series will help you think like a designer so you can create a well-lived, joyful life. Participation in both sessions are strongly encouraged.  Session one will cover the life design framework, help you develop a designer mindset, and allow you to explore what is most important in your life.

    Your personality affects the way you interact with everyone. Gaining a deeper awareness of yourself and others is essential to developing your emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. During this seminar, students will take an abbreviated version of the DiSC personality assessment and participate in self-reflection to learn how they can improve their teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

    Do you find yourself constantly procrastinating and suffering at the last minute? Struggling to find the energy and motivation to complete your work? This workshop is for you! This seminar will review the impact of nutrition, sleep, exercise and metacognitive strategies to help you establish a routine, stay on track, and make the most of your meals and time.  
  • “Bad to the Bone”– Researcher Bias - Brought to you by Bad Guy by Billie Ellish Wednesday, February 22, 5:00 pm MCC Meeting Room

    Sometimes, the very person who is conducting the research can harbor pre-conceived notions that negatively affect the quality and accuracy of their research. In this session, we will discuss this researcher bias and how to detect it.  
  • Interpersonal Development: “Midterm Academic Renewal” Wednesday, March 1, 5:00 pm MCC Meeting Room

    Maintaining motivation is especially difficult during the spring semester. This session will guide students through a reflection on their academic progress during the first half of the semester, then students will create a plan for achieving/maintaining success and accountability during the second half of the semester.

Signature Programs and Events

• Diversity Scholars Banquet

  The Diversity Scholars Banquet is put on by the Multicultural Center each semester to celebrate the accomplishments and aspirations of our diverse students. The purpose of the banquet is to provide an inspirational diverse experience for our students.

  The event is help each semester for students with the following criteria:

  Students from diverse backgrounds
  24 or more earned hours
  Overall GPA of 3.25 or higher

• Multicultural Graduation

  The Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center host this event to bring our diverse student body together to honor their successes and to recognize this exciting next step in their life journey. This is a great opportunity to honor our graduates.

  During the celebration, we will have a short program to recognize the graduates and each student will be given a certificate and stole that can be worn at the December or May Graduation as an emblem representing their multicultural background. We would love to celebrate this milestone with you, your friends, and your family.

• Lavender Graduation

  The Lavender Graduation is a ceremony to honor the graduating members of the LGBTQI+ community and their allies. The Lavender Ceremony was originated by RonniSanlo at the University of Michigan in 1995 and has since been held at colleges and universities across the country. This commemoration is a cultural celebration that recognizes LGBTQI+ students of all races and ethnicities and acknowledges their achievements and contributions to the university. Each student will be recognized for their academic accomplishments and be awarded a certificate, and chord to be worn at commencement as an emblem representing LGBTQI+ community pride.
• Multicultural Showcase

  The Multicultural Showcase introduces the campus and community to the various cultures represented at ETSU and in the surrounding community. Students model traditional attire from various countries, including some that are different from their ethnicity. Over 15 cultures and ethnicities are represented in the program through attire, food, poetry, and music.
• Unity Fest

  Unity Fest is an annual and campus-wide event that brings all students together to celebrate and appreciate each other. Many organizations participate to provide fingerpaints, calligraphy, and many other activities. The day is filled with fun, entertainment, and a smorgasbord of cultural foods. The festivity will include giveaways, novelties, interactive games, and live music.
• Cultural Remix

  The Expo is an annual event that introduces incoming students to various student organizations, university departments, and faculty and staff members. Through culturally diverse entertainment, activities, and food, the event provides exposure to different cultures and promotes upcoming programs and events offered by the University and the Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center. The Expo includes many activities that are available for students to participate in such as calligraphy, origami, henna painting, cultural music, and dancing.
• African Night

  Allows people to experience the rich culture of Africa without leaving Johnson City. A night of gathering and celebration through music, acting, dancing, and pageant giving you an exquisite taste of the African culture. This event is usually hosted by one of social media’s finest comedians. To keep the energy going there is an after-party turned up with beats from a renowned DJ. African Night is truly a unique and unforgettable experience.
• Hispanic Heritage

  Is usually observed from mid-September to mid-October. During this time we honor the contributions of Latino and Hispanic communities, highlighting their diversity, culture, and traditions.
• National Coming Out Day

  National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBT awareness day observed on October 11. Founded in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends, and colleagues, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person. The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.
• World's AIDS Day

  World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day.
• Native American Festival

  ETSU celebrates Native American Heritage through art, music, and historical legends with an emphasis on the Cherokee culture. This celebration includes award-winning dancers, storytellers, artists, and musicians gathering at the Quad to share knowledge, celebrate heritage, and demonstrate skills which include Women’s Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, Buckskin, Northern Traditional and Southern Straight dances, Shell/Stone/Wood Carving and many more.
• Coffee Hour

  Coffee Hour is a culturally enriching experience designed to give students a chance to present their ideas in an open and relaxed setting. Presenters share their thoughts and feelings on a variety of topics and issues concerning our country’s culture, history, social justice issues and also promote awareness and discussion among those attending. Enjoy a cup of coffee and change the world
• International Student Success Arrival Week

  The International Students office offers many helpful opportunities and events during arrival week before classes start. Our Quest events will help you make a smooth transition to ETSU, become more comfortable on campus, and learn important information that will help you become a successful student. Quest opportunities include: 

  • Guided Tours of Campus- Take a tour of campus with an ETSU student. Learn about important locations and become acclimated to campus.
  • Welcome Lunches- Enjoy lunch with current ETSU students and other new international students.
  • ISS One-Stop Shop- receive help with important arrival tasks and learn important information, all in one location! Stations include:

  • • Setting up a bank account
    • Activating a SIM Card or purchasing a cellphone plan
    • Learning about the University Health Center and setting up a TB Test appointment
    • Getting a student ID card
    • Learning about Johnson City public transportation
    • Tutorials for ETSU applications and student systems
    • Getting connected to other important university resources and offices

    ETSU Preview Day- Sign up for this full-day program to meet other new students, learn about the campus, and participate in fun welcome activities!
  • IBB Welcome Social- Meet new and returning IBB students, play games to get to know each other, and enjoysnacks before heading to an ETSU cookout together.
