Program Questions

  • What is B.U.C.S Academy
    The B.U.C.S Academy program designed to give entering first-time freshman students a solid foundation before they start their Freshman Year. 
  • Is this program a summer camp?
    No, this program isn’t a summer camp. Instead, students move in early for the academic year and take a course counted towards their GPA.
  • How much will this program cost?
    All summer costs for the student will be covered by Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center for the entire program, including tuition and fees for a 3-hour credit course, meals, and housing.

  • Are we required to live on campus during the program?
    Yes, all students are required to stay on campus during the duration of the program. 
  • If I live in Tri Citites area, do I have to stay on campus during the program?
    Yes, all participants are required to live on campus for the duration of the program.
  • Can I bring my car?
    Yes, but students will be asked to take transportation provided by the program staff. 
  • Do I have a choice in the class that I will take during the program?
    No, Student will take ETSU 1020- Foundations of Student Success
  • Why do I have to take one of those courses?
    ETSU 1020 is designed to help you build a foundation for success in your freshman year and beyond. It helps you learn study strategies, note-taking strategies, time management, and more!
  • What are some other reason I should apply to, and participate in the B.U.C.S Academy program?

    Besides the head start on your college career:

    • You'll make friends with other ETSU students before the academic year begins
    • You'll have a network of faculty, staff, and peers in a supportive learning environment
    • You'll enhance your study skills in college-level reading, writing, thinking, and public speaking
    • You'll participate in academic seminars, workshops, and other on- and off-campus activities designed to familiarize you with ETSU and Johnson City. 
  • Do I need to attend a specific orientation as a Bucs Academy Student?

    Yes, you will attended an Orientation.

  • Do I need to apply for a specific term if I am planning to be a Bucs Academy Student?

    If you apply for the Fall term we will switch your enrollment term to summer so that you can take your ETSU 1020 class over the summer. You need to ensure we know if you plan to participate in B.U.C.S Academy no later than May 1, 2023.

Advising & Learning Support Questions

  • What is academic advising?

    Academic advisement is a shared responsibility, with students and advisors working together to develop and enhance educational plans and to promote the student’s academic success. Your advisor is a valuable link between you and the University. Advisors do more than just scheduling. Your advisor may routinely contact you regarding academic alerts, mid-term grades, course scheduling issues, and progress toward your degree. Advisors are a great resource and can provide information, recommendations, and referrals. The relationship students develop with their advisors is important to their success at ETSU.

  • How do I find my academic advisor?

  • Do I have more than one academic advisor?

    Some students may have multiple advisors (major, minor, licensure) who will provide advisement for each area. Other advisement or support areas such as Athletics, New Student and Family Programs (NFSP), Honors Advisement, Student Support Services, or Medical Professions Advisement or B.U.C.S Academy may contact students to discuss additional advisement opportunities or requirements. Students pursuing secondary education (grades 7 through 12) licensure should contact the College of Education during their first semester at ETSU (423-439-7626).

  • How often should I consult with my academic advisor

    Students should consult with their advisor each semester and especially before making decisions that may affect their academic progress and success. Discussions with the advisor may include: understanding degree requirements, dropping a class, withdrawing from ETSU, selecting courses, and exploring career options. Students are ultimately responsible for their academic decisions, including course selection, meeting prerequisites, and adhering to ETSU policies, procedures, and deadlines.

  • Is academic advising mandatory?

    All students have a major advisor and should confer with their advisor each semester and when questions arise. In fact, ETSU requires most students to consult with an advisor before registering each semester. Students have an advisement hold each semester that will prevent registration until the student has consulted with their major advisor. Mandatory advisement ensures timely and accurate course registration and helps keep students on track for graduation.

  • I have a Learning Support requirement, what does that mean?

    The Learning Support Program at ETSU provides additional instruction in specific, linked general education courses to meet requirements and support with essential skills in Mathematics, English (writing components) , and reading comprehension. Participation in this program is required and is based on ACT/SAT or Accuplacer test scores.   • I am undecided about my major or career path. Who can I talk to about that?
    The University Advisement Center (UAC) is an office specifically designed to support you in career and major exploration. It is absolutely okay to be undecided about your major – many students are. The advisors in the UAC are available to help you explore options and make decisions that are best for you.
