National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza at
East Tennessee State University

What is the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)?

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was founded in 1930 with the mission to promote “unanimity of thought and action as far as possible . . . and to consider problems of mutual interest” to the member organizations. Today, this international organization has grown to include nine historical fraternities and sororities representing over 6,500 graduate and undergraduate chapters and hundreds of thousands of members and alumni worldwide.

ETSU is proud to support five undergraduate chapters as part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council on campus today. Each group not only plays a vital role in student life but continues to produce confident and skilled leaders, who are not only succeeding academically, but demonstrate a commitment to give back to their communities through service.

In honor of the historical and contemporary significance of these organizations, the University, in partnership with the NPHC at ETSU, will designate space on the main campus in Johnson City, Tennessee for the National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza. All Divine Nine organizations will be recognized.

The plaza will serve as a place to educate the campus about the history of each of the nine member organizations while offering a new outdoor gathering place for community engagement and programming. Included in the design of the project are some opportunities for demonstration of sponsorship.
