Brave New World: What to do with ChatGPT and other A.I. Content Generators March 1 | 1:30PM | Online

Artificial Intelligence (AI) content generation has become alarmingly more sophisticated with services like ChatGPT, a “chat bot” that can generate novel pieces of writing, poetry, and more with a prompt from the user. Come to this online, joint workshop offered by Academic Technology Services and the Center for Teaching Excellence to learn more about AI content generation and its capacities, as well as how we might adapt our instruction to adjust to this new reality.

This “essential” helps faculty understand the best practices for high levels of instructor and student engagement, highly effective peer to peer interaction, developing a strong instructor presence, and strategies for being responsible to student needs.This event is part of the four-part Teaching Essentials workshop series. Faculty who complete all four parts of the series will receive a certificate and a digital badge. This series may be particularly useful for new or junior faculty.

The relationship between students and their teachers is built upon mutual trust and respect. This workshop includes strategies that will help faculty understand their students’ backgrounds and academic preparation. This “essential” also includes strategies for developing a course with an appropriate workload and level of difficulty. The workshop will also help faculty develop activities and assignments that will build students’ self-efficacy and encourage students to seek assistance.

In this 30-minute zoom session, participants will get a chance to discover the central elements of Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) by talking through some ETSU examples. Through discussion, we will explore the potential benefits that this experiential education practice can have for our students as they work to put into action their academic and co-curricular content. This information session is for those curious to learn more about applying CEL in their courses/co-curricular activities.

Community-Engaged Learning: The Who and How - Feb. 22 | March 6

Monday, March 6th, 1:00-2:00In this hour-long, in-person session, participants will practice how to learn more about who their students are as they engage in the experiences that are the central text of Community Engaged Learning (CEL). We will explore the importance of building deeper and more personalized bonds between our students and their CEL work by looking at a variety of forms of critical reflection. This workshop is for ALL levels of interest/knowledge of CEL.

A principle of fair grading practices is that grades should be mathematically sound and correctly describe a student's level of academic performance. In this challenging workshop, we'll explore the pitfalls of - and alternatives to - several common grading practices, such as the 0-100 scale and semester/unit average scores.

Taxonomies of Learning - April 4 | 2:30PM | CTE

433 Sherrod Library, CTE Conference RoomAs instructors we want to ensure that our students leave our classes having learned something. However, how well do we measure what was actually learned? We want our students to be able to do things like think critically or solve problems, but how do we assess that? Our accrediting bodies demand evidence that our students are meeting particular outcomes, but how do we really know if they are doing so? In this workshop we will learn about tools called taxonomies of learning that allow us to formulate questions and measure outcomes across a variety of domains. We will use multiple taxonomies of learning to create questions and think deeply about what we want our students to learn and how we can make sure that they are learning. Finally we will use taxonomies of learning to think beyond a single course and map outcomes for entire curricula.

From Disability to Universal Design - Feb. 7 | 10AM | Culp

Join us for an interactive experience with Disability Services director Mary Little and CTE staff Phil Smith. We will meet in Disability Services (3rd floor of the Culp) for a tour of the new facility and resources available to faculty and students. You will gain an understanding of many of the specific disabilities, the process for receiving accommodations and the application of accommodations often required. Attention will be given to faculty/student/institution responsibility for accommodation and best practices for working with students with disabilities. Then we will explore how to apply some principles of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to course design and daily interactions and invite participants to consider multiple ways to design outcomes, learning activities, and assessments that are accessible and engaging for all students.

Hybrid format AvailableHow can teachers encourage students to actually use more effective study strategies? We know what they are, we tell students about them, but it does not always stick! In this workshop, we will present some best-practices in learning in an easy to understand format you can share with students and some motivational strategies to encourage students to use them. Deidre Johnson from the CFAA will share some insights on common struggles of students who seek tutoring and supplemental instruction, and what works and does not work for these students. Participants will leave the session with a greater sense of common student study skill pinch points, an understanding of best practices in the science of learning. We will also share D2L template modules with free OER study skills resources you can integrate right into classes.
