University School Ranked 8th in Tennessee by U.S. News magazine
Top ranked school in the region
JOHNSON CITY – (April 22, 2020)
University School is ranked as the eighth best high school in Tennessee by U.S. News
& World Report in its 2020 “Best High Schools” listing.
Located on the campus of East Tennessee State University, University School is the
only school in Northeast Tennessee ranked in the top 10, and is also the highest ranked
school east of Murfreesboro.
“University School has a legacy of academic excellence, and we are honored to once
again be listed among the state’s best high schools in these rankings,” said Dr. Brian
Partin, director of University School. “Several factors were evaluated in determining
these rankings, and all of these measurements indicate that University School is a
champion for student success and college preparation.”
In July 1996, University School became the first K-12 laboratory school in the nation
to implement a year-round calendar.
According to U.S. News, the rankings were determined using a “holistic approach” assessing
schools on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading
and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth
and graduation rates. College readiness is based on performance on advanced placement
exams.
University School is one of 389 schools in Tennessee listed in the rankings.
