The Tennessee Department of Education has released the State Report Card for 2018-2019.  University School earned a 4 out of 4 for Academic Achievement, Ready Graduates, Chronically Out of School, and Graduation Rate.  Information on how the grades are achieved can be viewed on the TDOE Website.

State report card indicates improvements in local school district success rates

The Tennessee Department of Education released the results of its State Report Card Monday, giving local parents a closer look at each district's key performance indicators.

Johnson City Schools' academic achievement report reflected a 56% success rate for students at or above their current grade level on exams, representing a 0.4% increase from 2018. In math, the district reported a 60.6% success rate, reflecting a 1.9% increase from 2018. However, the district recorded a 49.7% success rate in English language arts, down nearly a percentage from 2018.

The rating system shown on the report card provides a score of 0 to 4 on each indicator, similar to a GPA, with 4 being the highest for each school. South Side Elementary School received a 4 across the board on all indicators. Towne Acres also scored high, with a 4 on overall academic achievement and 4 on attendance and 3.7 for student growth.

Liberty Bell Middle School and Science Hill High School recorded academic achievement scores of 3.2, while North Side Elementary School recorded a 2.4 and Mountain View Elementary School scored a 2. All other schools recorded a 3.6 or above in this metric.

In Washington County Schools, the student success rate increased by 3.7% to 44.9% after the district made strides in math and English. The district reported a 44.5% success rate in math, representing a 4.6% increase, and a 44.5% success rate in English, representing a 3.6% increase.

University School earned a 4 for academic achievement and ready graduates, followed by Gray with an academic achievement score of 3.8. Boones Creek Middle School, Jonesborough Middle School and Sulphur Springs recorded a 3.4, 3.6 and 3.6 respectively. The Washington County schools in need of most work in academic achievement were South Central, Fall Branch, Boones Creek and Jonesborough Elementary schools, which recorded a 1.8, 2, 2.4 and 2.4 respectively.

Carter County Schools reported a 30.8% success rate after a 4.5% increase from 2018. The district recorded a 31.4% success rate in math after a 7.3% increase since 2018, as well as a 30.3% success rate in English after a 2.2% increase. Results were similar in Unicoi County Schools, which recorded a 1.9% jump to 30.2% in their overall success rate after a 3.3% increase in math and a 2.1% increase in English.

Elizabethton City Schools also recorded improvements from last year after reporting a 43.3% success rate and improving about 2.5 to 3% in each area. Johnson County Schools recorded a 33.5% success rate after a significant 4% increase in math.

"Our goal is to provide Tennessee families, educators, community members, and public officials with information about the schools and districts they care about in a way that makes sense," Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn said in a press release. "The report card is another opportunity for the department to continue seeking input, listening to feedback and continuously improving as a result."
