Tom Garland, State Senator from Greeneville, Tenn., served as Senate Minority Leader, Administration Floor Leader, Vice-Chairman of the powerful Finance, Ways and Means Committee, the Committee on Committees, the Legislative Council, the Commerce and Labor Committee and the Judiciary Committee. He is a successful businessman, a leader in his church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and holds membership in a large number of civic and fraternal groups. He has a long list of honors and positions of civic service, such as his selection on several occasions by the Capitol Hill Press Corps as one of the most efficient legislators in the Tennessee General Assembly. Another honor was an award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education by the Tennessee Council of Private Colleges, and in 1967 being named the Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Greene County. In his business, he is considered a success. In his local community and the state of Tennessee, he is highly regarded as a man with a continuing interest in improving the lot of his fellow man.
