Mrs. Cox earned her M.A. degree from ETSU through part-time study while she was a teacher in the Kingsport School System. She did additional study at the University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia, Agricultural and Industrial State, and at the Judevine Center for Autistic Children, St. Louis, Mo. Cora Cox was a driving source of energy for the public education program for autistic children in the Kingsport area. In addition to the Kingsport City System she also taught in elementary schools in Nashville and Arkansas and taught college courses at Steed College and Carson-Newman. She initiated the Head Start program in the Kingsport area, established scholarship funds at Dobyns-Bennett High School in memory of her late husband, and contributed liberally to programs of the Boys Club. She was twice named "Teacher of the Year" in Kingsport, and in 1976 named Tennessee "Teacher of the Year".
