John M. Coward

After graduating from ETSU, John M. Coward was commissioned as an ensign in the Naval Reserve and served three years on active duty. He served first on the USS Forrestal and then at the Naval Guided Missiles School in Virginia Beach. After his time in the Navy, Coward earned a master’s degree in Communication from University of Tennessee-Knoxville and took his first teaching position, at Emory & Henry College in Virginia. He left that position to to pursue a doctorate in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. Coward has been on the faculty at University of Tulsa since 1990, teaching journalism and communication classes and has served as chair since 1998. He is author of “The Newspaper Indian” and has compiled and edited a collection of news and editorial reports on the Indian wars.
