Middle School Math & Science Scholars Program
Welcome to the home page of the East Tennessee State University Math and Science Scholars program. The program is designed to expose middle school students (6 th, 7 th, 8 th, 9 th) to current developments and research in the STEM field, to instill in students a love for math and science education and to encourage and inform students at an early age of careers in STEM education. The program will allow students to become actively engaged in the inquiry process by allowing students to ask questions, describe objects and event, test their ideas with what is known, and communicate what they have learned. This one-week program will give students a taste of life at East Tennessee State University. Each day’s session will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m.
The program will encourage the next generation of researchers to retain and develop a love of mathematics and science and serve as a bridge program for today’s middle school students to become tomorrow’s university students. One of the features of the program is small class sizes taught by East Tennessee State University professors from the various math and science departments, including biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.
Students will have opportunities to become actively involved in ‘hands-on minds-on’ research. Making use of university materials and equipment to conduct scientific investigations, students will spend time with their professors in research and computer laboratories, as well as doing field work with their instructors. They will experience the joy and excitement of discovery and catch a glimpse of the many career possibilities in math and science education.
