Title:
When Old Meets New:
Mixing Between Our Galaxy and
Infalling Clouds
Abstract:
Our Galaxy is not alone.
It is surrounded by a gaggle
of smaller galaxies and by enormous clouds of gas.
Just as some of the
smaller galaxies orbit into and merge with the Milky Way, it
appears that some of the clouds are also colliding with and
merging into the Milky Way.
The collisions are
hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic in nature, in that they
involve the flow and mixing of fluids.
My group has been
simulating the mixing, with the aid of high performance
computer systems.
I will present our
simulational results and show how they compare with
observations of the clouds.
Refreshments will be served at 3:45 PM
