Master of Social Work

Department of Social Work

In an effort to make our programming more accessible to the people of the region we share, the Department of Social Work has for the past several years offered BSW and MSW courses at off-site locations. Following the initial effort in Bristol, TN (with students graduating there in 2014), these off-site locations currently include BSW programming in Kingsport and Sevierville, TN, and Abingdon, VA,  along with Advanced Standing MSW programming at Kingsport, TN, and Asheville, NC. More sites have already been selected for BSW and MSW programming, these to include the full or "Traditional" MSW option for students lacking the BSW degree. Announcements will be made locally with the initiation of programming in all sites and, of course, on the appropriate departmental webpages.

This effort to provide easily accessible classroom instruction is combined with a select menu of online courses and every effort to provide field education (internship) opportunities in the immediate locales where students live or work. It is an expression of the commitment of the Department of Social Work at East Tennessee State University to maintain quality through face-to-face interaction with all students, while also recognizing that some curricular content lends itself quite appropriately to electronic media and the conveniences offered to students through asynchronous learning environments.

Off-site classes are typically taught by the same full- and part-time faculty who teach courses on the main ETSU campus in Johnson City, TN, with pedagogies and intended learning outcomes identical to program counterparts there. If you're committed to a career as a professional social worker and the education/training that this requires, I urge you to consider the convenience and quality of near-by off-campus academic programming as provided through our BSW and MSW "cohorts". For more information, regularly visit our departmental website or contact the director of the BSW or MSW program at ETSU.
