BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE

John W. "Jack" Tottle, III was born on November 4, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to suburban Virginia. Tottle first experienced bluegrass music as a nine-year old child at camp. The camp experience led to an early, unsuccessful attempt to learn to play the guitar. Later, as a teenager, Tottle learned to play both guitar and mandolin. With friend Dick Stowe he played bluegrass music and frequented local bluegrass clubs, where the two heard such artists as Benny and Vallie Cain, Pete Kuykendall, Eddie Adcock, Roy Self, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs. In 1958 Tottle joined his first band, the Lonesome River Boys, a group which also included Dick Stowe, John Kaparakis, and Jim Buchanan.

Tottle attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in the late 1950s, but before he graduated he enlisted in the Army. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he joined a band called "The Tank Hill Haybalers." While in South Carolina, he had the opportunity to play on the "Carolina in the Morning" show on WIS-TV, Columbia, South Carolina in October 1961.

By 1962 Tottle had returned to Dartmouth and to the Lonesome River Boys (LRB), who played every Sunday at the Showboat Lounge in Washington, D.C. In 1962 LRB recorded an album for Riverside, which released the disc in 1963, the same year in which Tottle graduated from Dartmouth with a major in political science. By the mid-sixties LRB personnel had changed, so that Tottle was the only remaining original member. He left the band and worked in the Washington, D.C. area for a couple of years. He then went to Central America and subsequently became an administrator with CARE. He spent several years in Guatamala and India supervising nutrition programs for CARE.

In 1971 Tottle returned to the United States and settled in Boston. Banjo player Don Stover persuaded Tottle to join his band, the White Oak Mountain Boys. Tottle remained with this band for two years and recorded with the group on an album for Rounder Records.

Around 1975 Tottle formed a band called "Tasty Licks" (TL). TL became known, initially, for its experimentation and arrangements, and then for its traditional bluegrass rendition. TL recorded two albums for Rounder, "Tasty Licks" and "Anchored to the Shore."

The 1970s also saw Tottle expand his interests in bluegrass as a profession. He wrote numerous articles on bluegrass music and on producing recorded bluegrass music. Tottle not only wrote articles for Bluegrass Unlimited and Muleskinner News, but he also wrote an extremely successful instructional book, Bluegrass Mandolin, published in 1975. In addition, he penned liner notes for such Rounder artists as Tony Rice, Boone Creek, and J. D. Crowe and the New South. He delved into production on Kentucky Colonels reissue projects and on White Brothers and Jim Eanes albums.

Tottle left Boston in 1979 and moved to the Midway community of Scott County, Virginia, near the Tennessee border. For a while he played with the Payroll Boys, a group brought together by Jack Wright of Wise, Virginia. Soon, however, Tottle entered another phase of his music career, teaching. In the early 1980s, he taught guitar at Morrell's Music in Bristol, Tennessee and at Mountain Empire Community College. By the mid-1980s, Tottle realized that he wanted to teach guitar and the history of country music in a university setting. Therefore, he contacted the music department at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). With the support of the department, Tottle became an adjunct faculty member in music and began to teach three bluegrass-related courses: "The History of Country and Bluegrass Music," "Bluegrass Guitar" and "Bluegrass Ensemble" (ETSU Bluegrass Band). At the present time Tottle remains an adjunct faculty member of ETSU's Department of Music.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Jack Tottle Bluegrass and Old Time Music Collection consists of bluegrass and old time music taped from both live and recorded performances. A number of tapes were made from original 78 rpm discs which have never been re-released. The greatest number of recordings are from the 1950s and 1960s, with the balance dating from the 1940s and 1970s.

The collection includes bluegrass and old time music recorded in a number of different locales, but three locales in particular deserve special mention. The first is the Washington, D.C.-Virginia-Maryland area, a region in which bluegrass first found a significant urban, relatively affluent, and well-educated audience. Bluegrass' popularity in the capitol region helped transform it from a regional and rural music to a national and international phenomenon. Artists recorded from this area include the Country Gentlemen, Bill Harrell, Pete Kuykendall, Benny and Vallie Cain, and the Lonesome River Boys.

The second and third important locales are South Carolina and Japan. Recordings include the Poplin Family of Sumter, South Carolina; the Reece Sisters of Greenville, South Carolina; and the live television program, "Carolina in the Morning." The Japanese selections contains 76 performances recorded in the 1960s by 13 bands.

Organization: The Jack Tottle Bluegrass and Old Time Music Collection consists of one series of audio tapes. The tapes are arranged according to the original list given to the archives by Jack Tottle. The tapes are numbered consecutively. The master tapes are reel-to-reel audio; cassette user copies have been dubbed from the masters. Each tape (with a few exceptions) contains a detailed list of that tape's contents.
