BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

The James Agee Film Project was founded in 1974 by filmmaker Ross Spears, who was involved at the time in producing a documentary on the life of Tennessee author James Agee (1909-1955). Following the success of the film “Agee,” which was nominated for an Academy Award, the company expanded to produce and distribute documentary films. The company’s productions have included “The Electric Valley” (on the Tennessee Valley Authority), “Tell Me About the South,” and “Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People.”

Ross Spears was born in 1947 in Johnson City, Tennessee. His mother, Mary Alice Hunnicutt, was a public school teacher and his father, Ross H. Spears, Jr., was mayor of Johnson City in 1959-1961 and again in 1963-1965. Spears earned a MFA degree in 1974 from the California Institute of the Arts. He has been honored for his work by such awards as a Lyndhurst Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Tennessee Governor’s Award for the Arts and Humanities, and the aforementioned Academy Award nomination for best feature documentary.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The James Agee Film Project Photographs consist of a number of historical photographs and negatives from the northeastern area of Tennessee that were donated to or copied by the film project from local Tennessee families and businesses. The images document life in the region during the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Included are images of Johnson City, Jonesborough, and Washington County showing East Tennessee families, residences, businesses, agriculture, landscapes, buildings, social and cultural activities.

The collection is arranged in three series, as follows: Series I, Administrative Files, undated, Box 1; Series II, Negatives, 1875-1956 and undated, Boxes 2-4; and Series III, Prints, 1876-1956 and undated, Boxes 5-6. The project originally assigned an alphanumeric filing arrangement to the images (ex.: A1; B1, etc.). The images have been arranged as much as possible in this order sequential order. However, because of gaps and missing numbers in the sequence, a new alphanumeric numbering system was assigned to each image in order to arrange images in consecutive numerical order. For example, the image identified as “A1” is now listed as “JA-1 (A1)”.  Original negatives for which there were no corresponding prints were scanned and printed. These post-donation prints are found in Box 6.

No negatives or prints were found for the following numbers used in the project’s original numbering system:

B-1, 2, 3, 12-33

C-3, 15, 16, 18-22

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

Series I, Administrative Files, undated, Box 1.

Series I consists of two folders that contain lists that identify negatives and prints according to the project’s original numbering system. Within each folder there are also stickers with image descriptions. The series is arranged alphabetically by folder heading.

Series II, Negatives, 1875-1956 and undated, Boxes 2-4.

Series II consists of black and white negatives that depict images from the northeastern area of Tennessee. The images document the lives, work, and culture of the region’s inhabitants as well as depicting the landscapes and built-environment of the area. The negatives were arranged numerically following the project’s original numbering order with a new alphanumeric filing system. For example, the image identified as “A1” is now listed as “JA-1 (A1)”.

Series III, Prints, 1875-1956 and undated, Boxes 5-6.

Series III contains photographic prints and copy prints made from the negatives in Series II. Most of the prints have negatives found in Series II. Where original project prints were not found for negatives, these negatives were scanned and images were then printed. These post-project donation prints are housed in Box 6. All prints are arranged numerically with the alphanumeric numbers (“JA” numbers) corresponding to the negative numbers found in Boxes 2-4. There are a few prints that do not have negatives (JA-457 through JA-483).
