BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Horace Cowles Atwater was born on March 14, 1819 in Homer, New York. He graduated from Yale College in 1842 and from the Yale Divinity School in 1845. At that time, he began to serve as a Methodist minister in New England from 1845 to 1857. He served Congregational churches in Wisconsin and Ohio from 1859 to 1867. Prior to coming to Tennessee in 1870, he served as pastor of the Reems Creek Presbyterian Church near Weaverville, North Carolina for about eighteen months. On September 9, 1870, he was received by the Holston Presbytery and served from 1870 until 1877 as pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, Tenn. He died in Elizabethton on February 7, 1879. (Source: Presbyterian Historical Society, Montreat Office, August 24, 2005)

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Horace C. Atwater Collection consists of a copy of Atwater’s handwritten diary and original handwritten lecture notes and handwritten sermons that Atwater wrote and delivered as a minister between the 1840s and the 1870s. The sermons help document religious life and Protestant denominational practices in mid-19th century America, especially Atwater’s time as a Presbyterian minister in East Tennessee. The notes and sermons are arranged in alphabetical order by title with untitled material filed at the end of the series. Atwater generally used part of a verse of scripture in titling his sermons. The source of this text from the Bible (King James Version) is identified in brackets. [Example: [II Kings 5:12] refers to the second book of Kings, Chapter 5, verse 12] A compact disc containing digital scanned images of the diary and five of the sermons is also included. A poster produced (c. 2005) by the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton commemorating Atwater’s ministry is housed in an oversized map folder by accession number.

The collection is organized into three series, as follows: Series I, Diary, 1836-1838 and undated, Box 1; Series II, Lecture Notes and Sermons, 1842-1875 and undated, Boxes 1-5; and Series III, Oversized Material, c. 2005, Oversized folder 1.

Important subjects in the collection include the following:

Atwater, Horace C. (Horace Cowles), 1819-1879

Presbyterian Church—Sermons

Preaching—United States—19th century

Sermons, American—19th century

Tennessee, East—Religious life and customs

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

Series I, Diary, 1836-1838 and undated, Box 1.

Series I consists of a printed copy of Horace Atwater’s handwritten diary. The diary covers only a brief period in Atwater’s life during the mid-1830s. It documents his daily routine, travel, readings, study, and thoughts on primarily religious and moral matters, including ministerial work. Note: The original handwritten Atwater diary was retained by the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. The archives was given a compact disc containing scanned photographic images of the diary produced by photographer Doug Thompson. A paper copy of the diary was printed and filed in Box 1, folder 1, along with the compact disc.

Series II, Lecture Notes and Sermons, 1842-1875 and undated, Boxes 1-5.

Series II consists of handwritten lecture notes used by Atwater for various occasions, including weddings and funerals, as well as over 100 handwritten sermons written and given by Atwater as part of his commission as a minister of the Presbyterian Church. Atwater gave most of these lectures and sermons titles (often based on Bible scripture), and this system has been maintained in arranging the notes and sermons in alphabetical order by title, with untitled material filed at the end of the series. Note: Five handwritten sermons were retained by the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. The archives was given a compact disc containing scanned photographic images of these sermons produced by Doug Thompson. Paper copies of these five sermons were then printed. These printed copies are filed in alphabetical order by title with the rest of the sermon series. The compact disc is filed in a folder at the end of the Series I.

Series III, Oversized Material, c. 2005, Oversized folder 1.

Series III consists of one oversized poster titled “Handwritten Sermons by H. C. Atwater, Pastor, 1870-1877,” which was created by the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, Tenn., as part of an exhibit of Reverend Atwater’s ministry at the church. The poster is filed in a map folder in the map cabinet by accession number 724.
