Archival Studies

During their field experience at the Archives of Appalachia, students will work with archives staff in arranging and describing the Empire Furniture Company Records, which span from 1880-2004. Students will research the history of the company and learn why and how the Archives received the records.  They will experience each stage of the archival process by analyzing the historical and cultural value of the collection, sorting and arranging the documents, preserving fragile materials, and creating a collection guide to make the records more accessible to researchers. Students will also have the opportunity to create a display of their work and conduct web outreach.
