Submissions must relate to Appalachia and to a specific, upcoming theme.

Please consider the general deadline (March 31st for the spring/summer issue; August 31st for the fall/winter issue) as you consider a project.


Submission Procedure

Submissions are accepted as attached emails.

Include a brief (50 words or less) statement of the regional tie-in and your work’s pertinence to the theme.

Include an email address, regular mailing address, and daytime phone number(s).

Once Your Work Has Been Accepted

You will be notified via email if your work meets our needs. A final deadline will be confirmed at that point.

Our editorial staff strives to protect the integrity of the work while insuring a finished product of which we can all be proud.

We grant First NA (North American) Serial Rights. This means that after publication the rights revert to the author, who can then reprint the material so long as credit is given to Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine. For further questions about serial rights, please contact us.

• All visual images must relate to the theme.
• Illustrations in the magazine are black and white only.
• Photo essays and photos should include information and details for captions. Specify required copyright and photo credit wording as well.
• Some illustrations are done on assignment. For consideration, email your credentials and a few samples that demonstrate your range of styles.
• Photos and illustrations may be scaled or judiciously cropped to fit available space.
• Though we prefer first publication rights on work, we do accept reprints and simultaneous submissions. You need to supply us with signed reprint permission and inform us of other publications considering the work. Acceptance and publication in another Appalachian-focused publication does preclude its use in Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine.
