Helvetia, West Virginia: An Exploration of Its German Swiss Background
Jointly, students and Helvetia community leaders will explore the possible avenues to overcome the isolation factor in cultural heritage tourism promotion and community sustainability. Students will be building upon first-person experiences of their 2011 Roads to Appalachian Study Abroad through Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland (with an emphasis on visiting the Swiss regions from which the early Helvetia settlers originated). Students will research techniques used by isolated communities that have successfully overcome their geographical location in promoting heritage tourism for application in the Helvetia Swiss village.
