Edward A. Baryla, Jr., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at East Tennessee State University.  He is also the department chair and has served in that capacity since July 2005. 

In 2007, Professor Baryla was appointed to the Tennessee Real Estate Appraiser Commission as the educator member by then-Governor Bredesen.  He was reappointed in 2010 and currently provides service to our great state in that capacity.  Ed resides in Johnson City, TN.

Professor Baryla attended the University of Scranton and received a B.A. degree in Public Administration in 1982. He also earned an MBA with a finance concentration from the University of Scranton in 1990.  Ed then traveled 1000 miles south to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned an MA in Finance in 1994 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Finance in 1995.

Ed has been at ETSU since 1995.  In 2000, he was the co-recipient of the College of Business Faculty Excellence Award for Outstanding New Faculty.  He has also served as the advisor to the department’s Students of Finance Association at various times. 

Currently, he teaches Business Finance, Real Estate Finance, and Capital Budgeting.  In the past, he has taught almost every finance course in the college.  Professor Baryla has varied research interests and has been published in top academic journals, such as the Journal of Housing Research, Real Estate Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Research, Education Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and the Journal of Financial Planning.

Ed is a lifelong fan of Yankees baseball, Giants and Raiders football, Knicks basketball and Rangers hockey. Dr. Baryla enjoys personal finance, working out, golfing, most major sports, and horse races.
