Welcome to the Management/Marketing Dept to our friends from FACS: Kelly Atkins and Dr. Anna Roberts. We are excited to have them join us and add to our curriculum with the NEW concentration of Merchandising under the Marketing Major! This concentration in Marketing will offer students exciting opportunities in the world of retail store management, apparel, and buying. We also welcome Dr. Cliff Koen. Welcome back to Dr. Don Shemwell. He has just returned from 1 year in South Korea, and will be back in the classroom in fall 2009.


Michael Small Kelly Green Atkins  completed her Ph.D. in Human Ecology and M.S. in Consumer Services Management at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a concentration in Retail and Consumer Sciences. While attending the University of Tennessee, Dr. Atkins received numerous fellowships and awards including: RHTM Doctoral Research Scholarship; Hilton A. Smith Graduate Fellowship; Graduate Teaching Assistantship; Ida A. Anders Scholarship; and an International Travel Award. She was also the recipient of the American Collegiate Retailing Association's First Place Morris Mayer Doctoral Dissertation Award and the International Council of Shopping Centers ICSC Best Paper Award.

Dr. Atkins comes to the university with twelve years of professional experience in the retail industry. Her retail management positions were with international, national, and regional retailers such as: Gap, Lane Bryant, Brooks Fashions, and HiLites. In addition, her most recent teaching experiences include merchandising course such as: Introduction to Retailing, Merchandise Buying, Merchandise Planning and Control, and Merchandising Internship. Welcome Dr. Atkins!


Michael Small Dr. Anna Roberts  is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her areas of expertise include apparel construction and design, apparel product analysis, textiles, psychological/sociological aspects of dress, visual merchandising, and fashion advertising and promotion.

Research interests include exhibition of original apparel design in juried competitions, documentation of rare examples of outsider textile art (textile designs of those operating "outside" mainstream society), and historic apparel and textiles. Dr. Roberts has exhibited juried apparel designs regionally, nationally, and internationally, including a by-invitation-only exhibition in Lyon, France extended to only twenty-five designers worldwide by the International Textiles and Apparel Association.

Dr. Roberts has held numerous leadership positions with the International Textiles and Apparel Association and the Tennessee Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has also served the Tennessee State Department of Education as Family and Consumer Sciences Consultant, and advises the Collegiate Merchandising Association, an award winning student organization at East Tennessee State University.

Honors include College of Applied Science and Technology Foundation Teaching Award (awarded two times), Kappa Omicron Excellence in Teaching Award (awarded three times), National Kappa Omicron Nu Advisor of the Year Award, Tennessee Association of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Distinguished Service Award, and Tennessee Association of Family and Consumer Sciences District D Service Award. Welcome Dr. Roberts!


Michael Small Dr. Clifford Koen  comes to the Department of Management & Marketing from the University of New Orleans Department of Management. Dr. Koen served as Professor of Business Law and Management at UNO. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in business law, employment law, human resource management, and also taught the legal environment course for the Executive MBA Program. He has served as a consultant and conducted training programs for employers on EEO legislation, sexual harassment, employee discipline, performance appraisal, and other human resource-oriented topics. While at the University of New Orleans, Dr. Koen received several teaching awards from students and faculty at the department, college and university level. He has published numerous journal articles on a variety of legal and management topics including sexual harassment, disability discrimination, employment contracts, employee discipline, employment interviewing, and employer-employee communication. His hobbies and interests include hiking, bicycling, tennis, baseball, softball, and basketball.

Dr. Koen received his B.B.A., M.S., and J.D. from Memphis State University. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Tennessee. As Associate Professor of Business Law in the Department of Management & Marketing, Dr. Koen will be teaching classes in Legal Environment of Business. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Koen to our department.
