Signs of Spring

A photographic journey by the Inventor class

Preparing for our journey.

Many of the children in our class have expressed an interest in photography. Teacher’s documentation of children’s work and play is a large part of our program, so they children see us taking pictures throughout the day.

Mr Mike poses with young shutterbugs

We invited the photographer for the Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Learning and Development, Mr. Mike Talley, to come speak to the children about photography.

mr. mike talks to children about photography

Mr. Mike taught the children what a photograph was (a picture with light), explained a bit of history about photography, and gave the children tips about taking photographs. He suggested knowing what you want to take pictures of before you head out on a photographic journey. The children used this information to brainstorm a list of signs of spring that they wanted to photograph.

 madie inspects photos on display

After listening to Mr. Mike, a few friends ventured out into the light rain to take some photographs. When we returned , Madie noticed some photographic documentation in the hallway outside of the infant classroom. We feel inviting professionals to share their work allows children to gain a deeper understanding of a subject.
